The presentation included an overview of the New Media industry with some statistics regarding its growth compared to traditional media and how the economic crisis is affecting the overall market today.  The rapid growth in the industry together with the lack of related learning offered by the traditional educational institutions have made it difficult for companies operating in the sector to find people with the right skills; 77Academy was created specifically to cover this huge gap in Supply and Demand for new media skilled workers.

The audience was really impressed by the opportunity and participated with several interesting questions at the end of the presentation, which closed with a testimonial from Giulio, one of our experienced 77Academy students, who contributed by giving credibility to our words.

We collected good feedback from participants, although the Italian graduates are still sometimes suspicious about recruitment opportunities because of the Italian labour market. They feel 77Academy is, and we quote, ‘too good to be true!’

Internet advertising might become an island of stability in the midst of the world financial crisis. According to Barclay’s analysts, U.S. advertising revenue is forecasted to fall in 2009, with declines in most media but hitting newspapers and magazines the hardest.

Newspaper ad revenue is estimated to fall by 12% in 2009, while magazine ad revenue is expected to be down by 12.5%. TV and radio will also be hurt.

The situation for the UK’s advertising market hardly looks better: Credit Suisse Securities predicts that in 2009 the industry as a whole will decrease to 5% compared to 2008, with the exception that this forecast might pick-up as the year 2008 draws to conclusion. According to Citigroup’s analysts, forecast for the UK TV market decline by 6%.

Credit Suisse equally gave the most pessimistic prognosis of the Russian advertising market which is expected to decrease over 10%. It is said to be the gloomiest forecast among those recently prepared by assessing companies. CSS is particularly unenthusiastic about radio (-19%) and TV (-14%) advertising.

Only Internet advertising is expected to increase over 2%. According to Arkady Moreynis, Chief Product Officer at Rambler Media, one of Russia’s most popular internet brands, brings one peculiar feature to our attention: advertisers are starting to look for inexpensive and efficient ways of advertising and comments, “…that is why it’s only normal when they go for Internet advertising as one of the most effective advertising techniques in terms of expenses/result correlation”.

At this point, it is fair to say that digital advertising is continuously offering more opportunities for expansion due to its targeted nature and the ability to track the effectiveness of ads, this way offering more opportunities for expansion than traditional media.

When Google acquired YouTube in 2006 for the astronomical figure of $1.65 billion I realized that the Internet Revolution would have soon hit the way advertising is created for users of the Videos.

I genuinely thought that Google would have found a way of engaging YouTube users and monetize the traffic very quickly.

I was wrong.

Google has been experimenting new advertising formats on YouTube but has not yet found one that could really work. I believe the main reason for that is that YouTube users are very different from traditional TV users…yes YouTube is a social media where users rely on other people recommendations and comments to determine what is worth viewing.

And YouTube users are demonstrating the power of user generated genius (UGG) and I am using the example of the Daft Hands video to explain how powerful the social and viral effect can be. This video was first shown to me by the Italian DJ star Linus.

This original version was produced by a non professional user and has received over 18 million views and almost 60K comments…The video is based on the interpretation of the famous Kanye West Daft Punk song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” using hands to show the lyrics in a creative way.

But this is only the beginning…as it happens in YouTube, the viral effect has pushed thousands of other users to generate similar videos and the result is unbelievable:

Just looking at the top 4 related videos you can add another 11million views to it…

So in a very short period of time a very creative user generated video has reached almost 30million users…
