Yahoo! matching up to Facebook and MySpace

Now we know what Yahoo! had been up to all this time. Sorry Microsoft, but you were obviously not in any of Yahoo!’s priorities and neither were they much concerned about shouting their final verdict before the 3-week ultimatum expired.
Instead Yahoo! had been cooking up the expansion of its platform to fit one more similar to that of a social media network platform, to be fully launched early next year. As InfoWorld reports, the idea is for Yahoo! to allow the millions of people who use its applications; Web mails, instant Messenger, calendar, photo management and all other online services to mimic the social benefits and experience social networks like Facebook and MySpace offer to their user community, which have clearly made them so famous.
The outcome is that Yahoo! users will be able to customize their profiles by adding various applications, this making it much easier for Yahoo! users to find each other and search for people within their community to interact with, thus making it an overall social experience.
Ari Balogh, Yahoo!’s CTO explains, “It is rewiring Yahoo! from the inside out, across all of our properties, to fundamentally open up those Web services and provide a consistent development model, a consistent deployment and consumer experience as well.”
I think Yahoo!’s intention is to retain its users so that they don’t find the need to seek social relief in any of the other online social networks by providing them the tools and applications to build their own social community within Yahoo!’s own boundaries, through Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, etc.
If you can’t fight them, join them, right? Let’s at least hope Yahoo! picks up the best out of these social networks and controls its applications to avoid any spamming or cyber-stalking.
