Social networks give results, advertisers continue to invest

According to Nielsen statistics, Facebook was the #1 social networking site advertised on by 10 of the 13 industries when ranked by display ad impressions.
It is obvious that this increase in investment on Facebook has gotten rid of any misconceptions advertisers may have had in relation to online advertising and its effectiveness.
Time Americans spent on social networks and blogs accounted for 17% of the overall time spent online, nearly three times the percentage of time spent a year ago, according to data from Nielsen.
At the same time, the estimated online advertising spend on the top social network and blogging sites increased 119%, from approximately $49 million in August 2008 to approximately $108 million in August 2009.
There’s an apparent increase of online consumers who feel the urge to connect and share information about the products they like with friends and other networks. In result, consumers revert to the online communities (Facebook, MySpace) which represent an enviroment where they can share their interests with people and spend most of their time online, which in turn provide a place for brands to engage and interact with their target market.
In terms of industries, hardware, software, financial services and automotive decreased their overall ad spend, while for the entertainment, travel and biz to biz industries, ad spend significantly increased, particularly that of the entertainment, by 812% in August.
