Real-Time, the Buzzword of Social Media

24 Jack Bauer lost the monopoly of real-time in 2006 with the launch of Twitter. As the microblogging service enabled everyone to say what he/she was doing and inform the rest of the world about it, a new habit was created that is now reshaping social networks and the online search industry in the foreseeable future.
I guess you are wondering: “Why all the fuss about real-time? What’s that going to change?” Well, in a news junkie era like ours, it is all about what’s happening NOW. From CNN to Sky News, if you are late in announcing an event, you are labeled with the L word. As the world is currently focused on the immediate moment, social media could not possible escape this trend, in fact, it will even magnify it.
Regardless of the social media of our choice, we are always looking for information whether from a personal (pictures of the latest party) or a professional level (a job posted on professional social network). And most importantly, we want the latest information immediately.
Now you think: “Well I just use Google and I get all of that”. Not really. You get what has been crawled by the robots of Google a week ago or even longer than that. If you are looking for the last post on Robert Scoble, you have a greater chance of finding it on Twitter rather than Google. The beauty of Twitter is that the real-time content you get is not provided by algorithms or machines, instead it is generated by a human, which means accuracy is a lot higher.
Twitter even has the potential of becoming Google’s main competitor (well that may never happen as Google will probably buy it out). However, such scenario is more and more probable as the uber geeks choose Twitter as their primary source of information.
The real-time obsession is now transforming social networks as well. Of course mobile social network like Brightkite or the application Google Latitude are naturally oriented towards real-time as they show you where your friends are and what they are doing. However, Facebook (in its attempt to block the Twitter threat) is going to follow the real-time trend with its new design. Google at some point will join the dance as it will in the future incorporate Tweets in its search results. And as the use of smart phones will increasingly become more mainstream, real-time will definitely reach another level.
Jack, even if you have killed thousands of terrorists and stopped nerve gas attacks, this is too much for you.

Hey Guillaume
Do you think that when Google start to list Tweets in its search results it will drive users away from searching for Tweets via Twitter?
Maybe Google should introduce a social network search following the same principal as its Image, News and Video search services.

Probably not Peter.People are already using other tools than Twitter (on Tweetdeck or Backtweet) to find information on the service, so Twitter would not really feel it.
Regarding Google, well as they might buy Twitter I think it would make more sense to integrate it into search results. Social media includes text, video and images so it may make more sense to include results from social media into the tools that already exist.
