Do you spend over 30 hours on the Internet per week? You probably don’t, but most teenagers do- social networks being their main destination.
MySpace’s announcement on the removal of 90,000 registered sex offenders was the straw that broke the camel’s back which has recently triggered the EC to sign a deal with a group of internet companies to protect young users from existent social networking sites.
NMA explains that European Online Safety Survey has reported that over 67% of teenagers, over 20,000 queried in 9 European countries, spend most of their online time on social networks and 15% instant messaging their friends.
The same survey revealed that almost 29% had been bullied online and 51% confessed they surfed the net without any parental supervision.
Online bullying has become a critical topic lately specially when it involves over 41 million social networkers only in Europe.
The aformentioned deal includes social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Google and as described by The Guardian, will cover different proposals for dealing with cyberbullying, altering default privacy settings for children and ensuring that users have the ability to report abuse with a single click.
Currently most policies have already been implemented by some of the 17 members involved in the agreement and it’s worth mentioning that sites such as Facebook continuously works through their own privacy issues and illegal activities surrounding the safety of their user base.
