Google’s OpenSocial to leverage open widget development and advertising
Posted by Admin @ October 31st, 2007 in Social Marketing
OpenSocial, Google’s surprise widget umbrella for social networks, is reported to launch tomorrow. Its goal is to allow widget (application) developers to create their social network applications once, and then be able to apply their applications in many social networks – GigaOM reports that next to Orkut, XING, Friendster, hi5, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Newsgator and Ning will be included. Up to now, making cross-network widgets is very hard due to different programming standards.
This puts OpenSocial directly opposite Facebook, which will not be included after it sold European advertisement inventory to Microsoft last week and will retain its own standards.
For ad-sponsored widgets, this would make for more opportunities to be seen and for marketers, OpenSocial will make selecting social network applications to sponsor a lot easier.
