Facebook’s attempt to socially overtake the Chinese market

Posted by Manuela Barreto @ June 26th, 2008 in Social Marketing

Its not a knock-off, its the actual Chinese Facebook that’s causing all the big fuzz. The social networking website announced the launch of its Chinese-language version whose domain will be zh/cn.facebook.com, where users will be able to choose between a simplified or traditional version of Chinese.

Its interesting to see Facebook’s monetization strategy for the Chinese market, what’s left to see is if it can convert users from other Chinese-born social sites such as Xiaonei, Zhanzou, 51.com,( currently the largest social network in China with over 60 million users), to Facebook users instead.

Regardless, it is a good move on behalf of Facebook. By now, we know China has already surpassed the United States as the world’s largest Internet market based on number of users. In my opinion, it would be foolish to stay behind given that MySpace, Facebook’s biggest competitor, is already quite ahead of the game.

Today China has 221 million internet users, and it is prone to grow rapidly by the minute given that the Chinese population is so vast compared to European and the US population. In the end, all Internet related companies will gear towards appealing the world’s largest population by attempting to officially penetrate the market even though the Chinese market is quite crowded as is and competition is overflowing.
