Facebook: the new CBS?
Posted by Marco Corsaro @ May 23rd, 2008 in Social Marketing
I am in love with Facebook. I have discovered this Social Media only at the end of 2007…and I immediately understood that it was exactly what I was looking for…yes and what is it that I was looking for without really knowing it?? I only realized once I got it…:)
Facebook’s simple and intuitive interface gave me the opportunity to tell people about my life, my friends, the things I like, the music I listen too and much more…and no wonder FaceBook is such a extraordinary success.
But Facebook is also perceived as a great business and in October 2007 Microsoft announced that it purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for $246 million…valuing the company at over $15Billions…
But why is Facebook worth so much? Well maybe because with its 70 million users, Facebook is perceived already as one of the pillars of the new comunication era…effectively its valuation is fairly similar to the one a major TV Network…
And indeed for the sake of this article I just checked Google Finance for looking at the market cap (jargon for how much a company is worth) of a TV Network…and the first one I found was CBS…and guess what…CBS valuation is $15.66 Billions…I am either very lucky or it is very true that media is into a revolution…or maybe both :)
But what can make a website with only a few years of history worth as much as much as a giant as a ‘mass media company with operations in Television, Radio, Outdoor and Publishing segments. The Television segment consists of CBS Television, which includes CBS Television Network, CBS Paramount Network Television and CBS Television Distribution, Showtime Networks and CSTV College Sports Television’
Well the answer could be that we will change the way we “live” the internet…I can see already myself walking home and switching on my plasma Apple TV and using voice commands or touch screen to go on Facebook and start a video call with a friend of mine while choosing the TV series to watch choosing from some of my friends recommendations and meanwhile be an interactive target of new age advertising…by this time Facebook will be one of my gateways to music, chat, calls and video calls, management of photos and most likely facilitate my travel plans and shopping experience. Fascinating isn’t it?
We will see…
p.s: do not miss my facebook
