In the coming days Facebook will be rolling out some significant changes to its homepage and the way News Feeds are presented.

As an attempt to increase user engagement and keep information flowing, the folks at Facebook are tweaking the homepage allowing users to see what their friends are up to along with the latest conversations and  friend updates- Live!

It’s a bit like microblogging where users will now witness real-time update and message broadcasting.

However, Mark Zuckerberg explained that “in order to make this a reality, we must build Facebook to give everyone the power to share anything they want and connect with anyone they want. The way we’re doing that is to first extend people’s ability to connect with everything that interests them, and to give people a way to get updates from all of these connections. Then, we’re going to increase the pace of the stream, so you can immediately see what is going on around you.

Will this bring about privacy issues and lead users into thinking that the more information they share, the more they’re exposing themselves?

Another feature of the real-time streaming is that you can choose the group of people whose updates you’d like to have on the homepage. You can choose whether you want information from your old high school friends, family or just work colleagues. You have complete control on who and what you want appears on your News Feed, plus you can also use Friend Feed filters to select your friends.

Do you think Facebook is trying to look more and more like Twitter? Would you consider them direct competitors?

And for those of you wondering what’s been happening to some Pages lately, Facebook is also changing these in order to make them look and function like normal user profiles. In other words, users will now be able to share status updates, videos and photos with corporations, organizations and public figures in the same way they’re used to with their friends.

Take a look at this post on Mashable for more on Facebook user behavior.
