Facebook Grader, a boost to your ego
Posted by Manuela Barreto @ January 20th, 2009 in Social Marketing
I’ve got to admit I’m struggling to get past the first line of this post thanks to CNN’s live streaming of the Presidential Inauguration through Facebook. It’s fantastic!
Don’t miss out, watch Barack Obama live as America disguises itself in red, white and blue.
Back to my post. The things we’ve come to. Feel like stroking your ego for a minute?
Hubspot, the marketing software company let’s you do so with Facebook Grader. Just like the Twitter Grader, only this time it’s available on the popular social website, ranks user’s ‘reach and authority’ on Facebook.
The tool bases it’s ranking on three factors:
- the number of friends you have
- the power of this network of friends
- the completeness of your profile
Just did it myself– scored 86/100. In theory and if I really cared, I could easily tweak this number by completing bits and pieces of my profile like the about me section and location.

There are mixed feelings about this new tool, for example TechCrunch Michael Arrington doesn’t find it useful at all.
However, I do need to mention HubSpot is also the creator of some neat ranking tools designed for small businesses like site graders that measure SEO, traffic rank, etc.

Popularity tools like this one can only serve one purpose; as a vanity tool. I can’t think of one use for it?? These programs are an elitist load of crap.

I think this kind of tools will be used in the near future to identify the highest “authority” profiles to target advertising. Maybe in some months people will start selling their friends! :)

Good point. I guess it will be useful to identify influencers in a market. I will rephrase the last comment i made….
“these programs will help to identify the elite to sell them crap”.
