Facebook Fan Page: Consistency Baby, Consistency!

Another month, another Facebook Developer Garage session in London, this time about fan pages. Iskandar Najmuddin from Nudge talked about the FB news: Live Stream Box, Fan Box, translation of FB Connect into a dozen languages. He pointed out three aspects that should be taken into account when measuring your activities on Facebook: virality; traffic source; direction of the outbound traffic.

His colleague Toby Beresford presented some applications created by their agency and pointed out that some successful fan pages do not owe their success to state-of-the-art applications, but instead, to the smart use of already existing apps.

Moreover, Vladimir Oane explained the functionality of his tool UberVU, a comment aggregator that makes it easier to see what people say and do with your content, and Dan Lester, co-founder and CTO of iPlatform, gave us some technical insight on FB fan pages.

Ben Ayers from ITV showed us the different fan pages they have built for their most famous TV program. What was interesting was that everything he mentioned was related to the 2-screen experience (in this case TV and computers) and how these could interact with each other (through FB), enabling people to comment as they watched TV. These kinds of things have been seen before with the President Obama inauguration and the Michael Jackson memorial. He also talked about their use of social ads to increase the number of fans for Coronation Street: they were able to double the number of fans in just one week!

Finally, Buster Dover head of VCCP talked about what they have done on Facebook for the campaign “Compare the Meerkat”. He insisted on the key points of social media: awareness, engagement, conversation and core idea.

What was commonly shared by all the speakers was the idea of consistency: consistency of the message, the core idea and measurement. They all emphasized on the importance of having something clearly defined before jumping on the bandwagon. It seems that, the days of,  “I have a FB fan page, therefore, I have a Facebook strategy” are over, hopefully.

I like it!
