Facebook applications a potential gold mine for marketers

Creating a good Facebook application (widget) can do wonders for your website, VentureBeat reports. 77 sees this as a very cost effective method of drawing customers. But, like a good search engine advertisement, the method seems only applicable for certain companies and services: the application must have something – if not everything – to do with the company, and be appealing to potential customers at the same time.

Good examples are mentioned on the VentureBeat site, but we’d like to pick Hot or Not as a textbook example:
Hot or Not, a dating site disguised as a beauty contest, broadly appeals to the same customer group as Facebook. By creating an application for Facebook, Hot or Not has hit upon a whole new group of potential customers – young people who like to browse other’s personal pages. With Facebook gaining ground in Europe (according to the Globe and Mail, London recently overtook Toronto as the city with the most Facebook users) Hot or Not can expect even more growth in visitor numbers. Hot or Not was, up to now, mostly popular in the United States.
The idea of the story is this: when a company is able to create a service that is close to their core business or to extend a service they already offer, and if it can connect this service with a social network site in a meaningful way, it can be gold for its potential customer pool.
