Both Google and Yahoo are working on their own social networks

google_yahoo_social_network_070907.jpgGoogle and Yahoo are both investigating the possibility to open a ‘next generation social network’, reports TechCrunch. With the increasing use of social networks – and for 77 the increasing value to marketers – this interest is understandable. On Yahoo Mosh, not much is known yet. Google already had something like a social network, but Orkut never really lived up to Google standards and their new product name would be SocialStream. What the new network should do, can be found on the SocialStream page, but an interesting excerpt is (taken from TechCrunch):

‘Socialstream emphasizes improving social connections by making it more efficient to communicate with, share with, and view the social content of all the people in a user’s online social network. Socialstream provides a compelling user experience because it aggregates content across many different networks so a user has a single location to discover new content and communicate. The goal of Socialstream is to present social information in a way that ties it to the person who posted the information, and not the site from which it came.

It seems to be all about sharing and collaborating, a trend that Google has set out often lately. As Google realizes, they are well behind in the social network scene, so they will have to provide something that gives a real advantage to its users. Google will most certainly try to connect it with as many other services that it offers as possible. In this regard, Google has better chances than Yahoo as it already offers collaboration office tools, many Internet tools that can be personalized and thus displayed as expressions of one’s personality, and much, much more.
