Blitz: The online news aggregator by Marco Benedetto
Posted by Manuela Barreto @ March 16th, 2009 in Search Engine Optimization
Blitz, the online news aggregator by Marco Benedetto, ex-president of L’Espresso Group, is now live.
Marco Benedetto, current vice-president of the aforementioned group, has decided to plunge into the internet world by starting up his very own news aggregator which picks up headlines from many of the world’s online news sources such as The New York Times, The American, The Telegraph and celebrity gossip blogs, The Daily Beast and Star to name a few.
In an interview by Il Sole 24 Ore (see image) Benedetto exclaimed that ‘newspapers will not die’ -in defense to the many question marks he received from people regarding his news portal- and concluded by saying that people will always be in need of information.
It’s only natural people react this way given his editorial background, however, Benedetto is a full supporter of the web and regardless of the threat it represents to traditional offline media, it comes in handy when times get tough and prices rise.
77 has worked very closely with Benedetto in providing strategic and web consultancy for this new project. The 77 team has dedicated time to implementing a SEO strategy as well as optimized the site for better performance in the search rankings. The implementation of the blog tool, Word Press, was also sought after by 77 together with the employment of the right publishing plug-ins required for the site.
In the meantime, we invite everyone to visit Blitz and feel free to let us know your experience.

Looks interesting. I guess ideally the reader could print out a fully customised newspaper every morning or download it onto an ereader.
It will be interesting to see if the newspaper format cathces on online.
My only criticism is with the appearence…its a bit on the bland side with no images or multimedia above the cut.

Hi Peter,
actually an aggregator is not a customizable newspaper online, but it’s a sort of search engine that reads all the news from the sources and selects the most interesting ones.
The difference with a normal newspaper is that Blitz has no opinion, it’s a flash that publishes the news as fast as they occur.
About the graphics… that’s all folks.

Hi Mario
Yep, understood that its not customisable…but in an ideal world it should be…this flexibility would make these aggregators a lot more useful to the reader…i guess a bit like what netvibes and iGoogle allow users to do.
One question….how do these aggregators determine what is the “most interesting” stories…
….surely if they choose stories based on an algorithm to determine what is interesting then the aggregator does have an opinion?

Hi Peter,
yes, maybe this could be the next Blitz 2.0: good idea.
About how they determine the “most interesting” stories, I can tell you how is working Blitz.
Basically, behind this aggregator there is a small and young editorial office that every morning read all the Italian newspaper and has a look to all the digital newspapers worldwide; after this they make a selection of the most interesting stories, but it’s only the managing editor that chooses to public the articles.
