Google jumps in the social media search world with SearchWiki

Posted by Manuela Barreto @ November 24th, 2008 in Search Engine Marketing

On Friday Google launched ‘SearchWiki’, a functionality that allows users to customize their own search results and put them in control by allowing people to edit, review, delete and even add pages to the same search results.

The Official Google Blog makes clear to us that the changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the “See all notes for this SearchWiki” link.

The new feature also lets users create bookmarks within Google instead of having to go to other Web browsers to search for different sites. This is useful since we tend to check for the same things on a daily basis, at least I do, for example emails and weather forecast for the Siberian weather in Milan.

But one thing that has been of great concern to some bloggers including TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington, is: Why did Google do it?

The final theory says Google wants to collect and learn about search behavior through this particular feature and the longer users spend on Google, the more Google finds out about its users. However, the win-win situation lies in that the user will be able to customize their search results as well as comment on results to help other people.

Seeing it from a slightly different perspective, advertisers could really benefit from this because it allows businesses to get in contact with their consumers. It opens up a space for them to interact and give feedback on a specific product or service via the web. Google’s SearchWiki becomes yet another social media channel to reach a target audience, communicate and give feedback to both prospect and existing clients.
