Google gives users control over search results

Posted by Manuela Barreto @ July 15th, 2008 in Search Engine Marketing

Google is currently testing out their edit result feature which in theory will give users the ability to add, remove or classify their search results. The feature is not yet under the experimental lab area, however, some users who have been included in the bucket test have already spotted it around.

Take a look at this image I took from the TechCrunch post.

How it works is, once you get your search result you can vote on it whether you like it, hate it or want to get rid of it. If you mark it as good, the result will be promoted to the top of the search results.

Otherwise, next time you enter the same keywords in the search query, those you’ve marked as bad, will be hidden and you’ll just get overall different results. Basically, Google will allow you to do a Do’s & Dont’s type of thing.

So next time you search for the same keywords again while being logged in to your Google account, you will be able to see the changes you’ve made. Then, if you wish to revert your changes, you can just undo any modifications you’ve made and start from scratch.

It is quite original, plus I think it is a great way to engage users in making their search experience a bit more personal, interactive as well as helpful for future references.

This is definitely interesting news — just proof to show SEM will forever change along with the search engines.

I guess what people will begin to appreciate is their involvement with search engines and how they too can influence even the biggest of monsters…
