Standing on a chilly platform the other day waiting for my morning train, I was flicking through the FT news headlines on my Blackberry and was drawn to an article concerning the London Stock Exchange (LSE).
The gist of the article was that the LSE needed to change its traditional culture. In particular, the reference that this long established London institution was ‘..out of sync with the technologically-savvy…world of trading and exchanges’ made an impact on me, working as I do for an ad exchange company.
What is true of the financial world also rings true for the world of online advertising. In today’s reality, companies need to be tech-savvy and work out how the platforms that are available can drive the business forward. Technology is an enabler and emerging platforms are helping break down the inefficiencies and antiquated approaches that are associated with the world of online advertising.
Resting on your laurels can breed complacency in any business. Just as the LSE will face a threat from more nimble competitors seeking to steal market share, so a failure to start addressing how companies can implement new technology platforms can be used in their businesses could have a significant impact on their ability to compete.
The challenging business environment is forcing all companies to review how they operate as they seek to become more efficient. The companies that will be left behind are those which continue pursuing today’s approaches (soon to be yesterday’s) rather than embrace the emerging solutions.
