Online Reputation Management, what to do about it?

Posted by Manuela Barreto @ November 6th, 2008 in New Media Tips

Wandering the floors of IAB Forum Milan which held its 6th edition expo November 5th and 6th, I couldn’t help but realize the number of interactive agencies who at their stands were blatantly promoting and singling out one very important service: Online Reputation Management- the monitoring of conversations that revolve around your brand, promoting a positive image and suppressing negative content.

People like to talk, but we already know that. But for some ambiguous reason they tend to bring out the bad things and overshadow the good ones despite the topic of conversation. What they say, when they say it, where they say it are all important things to know in order to effectively manage your online reputation.

Online tendencies, as we’ve witnessed, have been focusing more and more toward online research and the social media. Brands are adopting new methods for online branding and online marketing, so the importance of knowing what other people are commenting about your company increases exponentially.

One clear example is Coca-Cola; and let’s be honest, it’s such a cool brand, you never thought anyone could ever make a negative remark about it, right? Wrong! If you conduct a search for the soft drink monster, you will find that within the first page search results, there’s an article titled ‘Killer Coke’; this is exactly what needs to be tackled.

Lee Odden from Online Marketing blog displays the key factors to take into consideration to have an impossibly impeccable online reputation and how to deal with issues of such kind. I also like how he mentions that “judging by the growth rate of the social web (Facebook 120 million users) in terms of adoption and new social communication/connection tools, the effect of social media on corporate, brand and even consumer reputations is not going away anytime soon.”

I would also add that reputation is as powerful as word of mouth, neither of them are meant to be ignored for they tend to greatly influence what people think. In other words, you definitely want to keep these under the microscope.
