Internet World 2009, London: Day 1
Posted by Peter Jackson @ April 29th, 2009 in New Media Tips

77Agency is going to be at the Internet World in London for the three days of the fair. We are covering the event extensively on Twitter. After one day spent here meeting people in the industry and attending several conferences and debates on social media, here are the main themes of the day, and as at 77Agency we believe in the power of 7 it comes with 7 points:
1. Strategy first
There is such a massive buzz around social media (Twitter and Facebook especially) that so many companies rush in without clear objectives. If a strong strategy is not developed then failure is down the road.
2. Know your clients (well)
Before offering clients fluffy solutions, understand their activities and get more information on their performances. Also be bold and tell them when they are going to the wall and that they do not have to be present everywhere. Some social media elements will just not work for them.
3. Consistency/Integration
Ok, social media is fairly new and attracts a great deal of attention, but the vast majority of the marketing budgets are still spent on traditional marketing channels that have been there for years or decades. Do not throw away everything: integrate your social media activities into your marketing mix to increase its effect and reach.
4. Commitment
Every form of content you create or leave on social media is potentially going to stay online forever, so do not launch something and forget it after six months. Keep acting and following what is happening.
5. Social Media Monitoring
Just to bounce back on the previous point, it is absolutely necessary to follow what people say about you online. Because your customers, potential customers, competitors… well everyone is there, so you better be there as well.
6. ROI
Return On Investment is definitely a huge theme for 2009. But it is even more vital for digital marketers as “something you can measure is something that can be proven, something that can be proven is something that will help you to get more money next year”.
7. Widget and desktop applications
As a big fan of both of them I was quite delighted that several speakers talked about it, especially Kieran O’Neill from Playfire. Facebook had just released a desktop app yesterday, which should spark of a whole new generation of desktop apps later this year!
