Nokia to offer mobile Maps and proximity marketing

Proximity Marketing on mobile devices seems to finally get off the ground: Nokia plans to supply over 100 million mobile phones with Nokia Maps which could become, in the eyes of 77, an excellent vehicle for marketing based on location.
Thomas Leliveld of Gate5 announced this at the recent Mobile Location Services conference, reported Emerce (Dutch) today. Gate5 was bought last year by Nokia and was up to then developing mobile location services.
Customers can use Maps for navigational purposes and has been freely available as a download since February. From now on Nokia is providing it as a standard with all models from their N-range. Nokia is practically first to move in this field, providing a ready-made platform for advertising based on location – or proximity marketing – for advertisers. It offers advertising built-in on the Maps platform, as well as daily adjustable advertising.
This is a great value for marketers, who will soon be able to target people physically visiting the sites that are important to them. Think of the menu of the day of your restaurant, displayed on the mobile phones of the people that are in your area, looking for a place to eat. That’s proximity marketing.
