New horizons for Yahoo and MySpace

MySpace, Yahoo and Intel have joined forces to offer users a way to exchange messages with friends through their television sets while at the same time watching their favorite show.
What’s this all about? BusinessWeek disclosed it’s a social-networking application launched jointly by MySpace, Intel and Yahoo that apparently merges TV with the Web.
The TV widget is meant to add internet content to your TV, meaning consumers will be able to browse through photos, add friends, view profiles and email by activating the TV widget.
The brainchild behind this– MySpace, who developed the application framework called Widget Channel, a mini-application which connects your computer to your TV enabling users to access MySpace.com through their device rather than having to rely on a browser.
“We are focused on: ‘What would I want to know right now?,” says Max Engel, project lead for MySpace ID. On the MySpace widget, members of the social network can perform such simple tasks as update their status and check up on the status messages of their friends—activities that would “not necessarily interrupt my viewing experience,” Engel continues.
Another feature of this widget is that in theory, consumers will be able to purchase products advertised on TV from online stores.
The new widget will go live in the US later this year while the UK launch has yet to be announced. In the meantime, take a look at what Stan from Mashable has to say about this new application.
