Alexa spreads its wings and improves its Ranking System

Alexa, the Amazon owned traffic tracking company, recently presented its newly formatted Alexa Ranking System.
The high user demand was what initially provoked Alexa to step forward and make a more accurate version of its tool. While Alexa based its ranking only on a small selection of Internet Users, those being the people who use the toolbar, many began to suggest that the web information company should increase its capacity beyond the usual Alexa community and into the entire population of internet users. This being a well taken suggestion by the company given the fact that they are in the process of making several major shifts within their system.
The HubSpot blog breaks it down nicely for us into these three factors:
1. More Sources
2. Improved Methodology
3. Better Rankings
Having more sources means more preciseness, that leading to less biased information, hence, more users become interested in referring to Alexa rankings when searching for a specific website popularity. By improving methodology they are providing valid information for all countries, while the better rankings trigger better results due to an improvement in its algorithms.
I’d say this is a good move on Alexa’s behalf considering how its tool usage has increased over the past months. Also, their initiative to make these changes shows great user loyalty, which is to their advantage since it will greatly increase their own popularity. What’s also good about this free service is that in the effort of not falling too far behind its main competitor, Google PageRank, users will now have two top-notch ranking tools available on which they can base their website research.
