Marketing introduced on free Blog services

It was bound to happen at one time: Free blog services are putting advertising on the blogs they are hosting. Ilse in the Netherlands is one of the first to introduce this on the weblogs it hosted, up to now, completely for free on www.web-log.nl. They claim they need to introduce marketing, as always and legitimately so, to maintain this service and its free support.
Users can buy off the mandatory advertising bar on top of their blog by taking a subscription for at least €30 per year – additional services included – or by paying €1,50 per month by SMS service to get the bar removed, as can be read on the web-log site (Dutch).
This is a typical example of a service that was offered for free for a long time to build a customer base, only to introduce marketing later along the line. Ilse’s web-log service reportedly has over 400.000 users, and we don’t believe any of them will change host because of an advertising bar (77 pixels high) that will be shown on top of their page. Of course, Ilse will have to be careful with the advertising is shows not to scare away customers with adult website advertising or other less politically correct marketing. But we predict this is the beginning of a long series of weblog services announcing the introduction of advertising.
